Leader In Me

Leader in Me is based on Dr. Stephen R. Covey’s books, The Leader in Me and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Coosa Elementary is honored to be the flagship Leader in Me School in Beaufort County, the 12th elementary school in South Carolina, and one of the Leader in Me Schools internationally to have been honored with Lighthouse status.

Leader in Me encourages students to make good choices through planning ahead, working well with others and taking care of their whole selves: mind, body, and spirit. These practices are embedded into the curriculum and modeled daily by our staff, reinforcing it to our students and community!

PBIS

Coosa Elementary School has implemented PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Support). We truly believe that the “future is built, one student at a time,” which is why we are using the PBIS approach. We are transitioning Coosa into a place where academic achievement soars, discipline problems are reduced, and students’ self-confidence is enhanced. There will be other informational sessions regarding PBIS presented throughout the upcoming school year.

What is Positive Behavior Intervention Support?
PBIS is a process for creating safer and more effective schools. It is a systems approach to educating all children by developing research-based, school-wide, and classroom behavior support systems. The process focuses on improving a school’s ability to teach and support positive behavior for all students. PBIS includes school-wide procedures and processes intended for all students and all staff in all settings. PBIS is not a program or a curriculum. It is an approach to creating a safe and productive learning environment where teachers can teach and all students can learn.

PBIS and Our School?
We have designed a behavioral expectation system (called the Behavioral Expectation Matrix) which displays expected behaviors in all areas of the school. These behaviors are discussed and taught in all classes. Posters are displayed throughout the school in each area reminding students of expected behaviors. Each nine weeks, students will have the opportunity to earn a citizenship award based upon behaviors related to the core values. Grade-level teachers have devised required expectations needed to accomplish this award. The citizenship criteria will be sent home with your child the first week of school. Each student that receives a citizenship award at the end of each grading period will receive a special incentive. Any student not receiving a citizenship award will have an opportunity to review schoolwide expectations and core values with the hope of receiving future citizenship awards.
