About Us
Coosa Elementary School opened its doors in 1998. The school's name is derived from the Coosaw Native American tribe which once populated the area. There are many spellings and pronunciations of this now extinct tribe, but the most preferred pronunciation is Coo-saw. Bob the Bobcat is our school mascot. The bobcat is the only native wild cat found in South Carolina today. Bob was selected by the student body. Our school colors are hunter green and light yellow.
More About Our School
Coosa Elementary School (CES), recognized as a 2023 National Blue Ribbon School, fosters and promotes an environment where students are actively engaged in 21st century learning. CES is honored to be the flagship Leader in Me school in Beaufort County and the 12th elementary school in South Carolina. Coosa is one of the Leader in Me schools internationally to be honored with Lighthouse status and Lighthouse Academic Honor Roll.
Purposeful Play is implemented in all pre-k and kindergarten classrooms. Through Purposeful Play, students can explore, discover, solve problems, and experiment in playful and imaginative ways. Coosa has a robust STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) focus, including a STEM Lab, competitive Robotics Team, and STEM-infused lessons across all content areas. Through these additions, students further develop problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. CES implements Project Lead the Way (PLTW), a project-based curriculum focused on hands-on, real-world activities, projects, and problems that help students understand how to transfer knowledge learned in the classroom to everyday life. CES earned Cognia certification in 2024.
Coosa is proud of its large military population and is excited to be a recipient benefiting from a U.S. Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) grant. This grant provides additional college and career ready resources to successfully expand Coosa’s STEM program. These choice programs work together to provide opportunities that allow CES students to demonstrate leadership skills while preparing them to be successful citizens — now and in the future.
