PBIS Information

Dear Coosa Elementary Parent:

Coosa Elementary School has implemented PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Support). We truly believe that the “future is built, one student at a time”, which is why we are using the PBIS approach. We are transitioning Coosa into a place where academic achievement soars, discipline problems are reduced, and students’ self-confidence is enhanced. There will be other informational sessions regarding PBIS presented throughout the upcoming school year.

What is Positive Behavior Intervention Support?

PBIS is a process for creating safer and more effective schools. It is a systems approach to educating all children by developing research-based, school-wide, and classroom behavior support systems. The process focuses on improving a school’s ability to teach and support positive behavior for all students. PBIS includes school-wide procedures and processes intended for all students and all staff in all settings. PBIS is not a program or a curriculum. It is an approach to creating a safe and productive learning environment where teachers can teach and all students can learn.

PBIS and our school?

We have designed a behavioral expectation system (called the Behavioral Expectation Matrix) which displays expected behaviors in all areas of the school. These behaviors are discussed and taught in all classes. Posters are displayed throughout the school in each area reminding students of expected behaviors. Please review the matrix on the next page. Each nine weeks, students will have the opportunity to earn a citizenship award based upon behaviors related to the core values. Grade level teachers have devised required expectations needed to accomplish this award. The citizenship criteria will be sent home with your child the first week of school. Each student that receives a citizenship award at the end of each grading period will receive a special incentive. Any student not receiving a citizenship award will have an opportunity to review school wide expectations and core values with the hope of receiving future citizenship awards.

As a school, we have adopted three core values that are an integral part of everything we do at Coosa:

· Actively listen.

· Use kind and appropriate language.

· Allow others to learn.

· Be appreciative of what others do for you.

· Be on time.

· Follow directions.

· Be ready and prepared to learn.

· Complete all work.

· Do your best each day.

· Be honest to others and yourself.

· Model good behaviors and set a good example.

· Always strive to do what is right (even when no one is watching.)
