Coosa Elementary School opened its doors in 1998. The school's name is derived from the Coosaw Native American tribe which once populated the area. There are many spellings and pronunciations of this now extinct tribe, but the most preferred pronunciation is Coo-saw.

The bobcat is our school mascot, the only native wild cat found in South Carolina today. Bob the Bobcat was selected by the student body and our school colors are Hunter green and light yellow.

Coosa Elementary is honored to be the flagship Leader in Me School in Beaufort County, the 12th elementary school in South Carolina, and one of the Leader In Me Schools internationally to have been honored with Lighthouse status based on Dr. Stephen R. Covey’s books, The Leader in Me and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.  The Leader in Me practices encourages students to make good choices through planning ahead, working well with others and taking care of their “whole” selves, mind, body and spirit. These practices are embedded into the curriculum and modeled daily by our staff, reinforcing it to our students and community!
